Letter dated 22 November 1860, Lewes, to J. Bertrand Payne. Lower thanks Payne for his letter and his kind review of one of Lower's books. The book in question is not named but might be Patronymica Britannica: a Dictionary of the Family Names of the United Kingdom (London: J. R. Smith, 1860; Lewes: G. P. Bacon, 1860).

Mark Antony Lower was born in Heathfield, England in July 1813, the son of Richard Lower. He was a school master from the 1830's through the 1860's, including 32 years at Lewes. He was a founding member of the Sussex Archaeological Society and the author of "Patronymica Britannica" and of several scholarly books on the history of Sussex. He died in London in 1876.
