Miscellaneous manuscripts, 1869-1905.

Three items relating to the Lippincott-Jessup scandal of 1867-1869 in Moorestown, N.J.: a printed broadside dated 8 July 1869 with a confession by Charles Lippincott, addressed to Chester Monthly Meeting of Moorestown, N.J.; an IOU from Charles Jessup to Mordecai Matlack for $400.00, dated 15 March 1883 in Moorestown; and a five-page letter from A. M. Stackhouse of Moorestown to "Dear Will," dated 23 July 1905, in which Stackhouse questions the validity of the confession printed in the broadside. These three items are bound together into one volume.

Chester Monthly Meeting (NJ) was established in 1803 by Haddonfield Quarterly Meeting out of Evesham Monthly Meeting. In 1827, after the Hicksite Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, the meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches. The Orthodox meeting changed its name to "Moorestown Monthly Meeting" in 1943. In 1951, Chester Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) merged with Moorestown Monthly Meeting (Orthodox) to form a united Moorestown Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends und...
