Evert A. Duyckinck was born on Manhattan Island, and graduated from Columbia University. Although accepted to the bar, he did not practice law, but lived a life devoted to literature. At the center of New York's literary culture, he had important friendships with Poe, Irving, and Melville, acting as editor, associate, and friend.
