James H. Smith (1897-1952) joined the United States Army in 1914 and served under General Pershing in the Mexican Campaign in 1916. He fought with the United States Army in France during World War I and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star for combat action and critical injuries sustained in July 1918 at the Battle of Chateau-Thierry.
