Barnes taught economics, sociology and history at various colleges and universities, including Harvard, Columbia, Smith, Amherst, Temple, Colorado, and the New School for Social Research from 1918-1955. He was with the editorial department of Scripps-Howard newspapers from 1929-1940 and was a consultant on criminology and penology to federal and state government agencies.
