Ein Zimmer mit zwei Betten, ca. 1880-1890.

Three handwritten role books (actors' scripts) for the play, which have been marked by hand as the property of Theodor Bloch, who ran a theater lending library in Philadelphia from around 1880 to 1895. The role books are for the following parts, which appear to contstitute the complete cast: Seidel, Stolle, and Hausknecht. The work appears to be a one-act play with three scenes. The identification of the author (whose name does not appear on the role books) is based on the listing of the play in Bloch's catalog for his library (dated 1886; see box 34), where the work is described as a farce (Posse) by Friedrich, in one act, with 3 male roles. There are several German plays bearing a similar title, which are apparently based on a French source that could not be identified. It was not able to be verified whether there is any confusion with the following one-act plays: Ein Zimmer mit zwei Betten, by Theodor Hell (1775-1856; pseudonym of Karl Gottfried Theodor Winkler), listed in Karl Goedeke's Grundriss zur Geschichte der deutschen Dichtung aus den Quellen; Ein Zimmer mit zwei Betten, oder: Wem gehört die Frau? Posse nach dem Französischen, by W. Drost (no. 117 of Eduard Bloch's Dilettanten-Bühne); or Wem gehört die Frau, oder: Ein Zimmer mit zwei Betten, Schwank in einem Aufzug, nach dem Französischen, by Theodor Flamm (1822-1902). With regard to the collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills, there is no mention of the play under the title given on the role books, but it is possible that an 1881 advertisement for a play entitled "Eine Parthie 66, oder: Wem gehört die Frau," by Friedrich may be relevant (see folder 702; no character list is given).
