Die Verlobung bei der Laterne : Operette aus dem Französischen, ca. 1859, 1870-1895.

The item is a published copy of an unattributed German-language translation of the original French libretto, Le mariage aux lanternes, by Carré and Battu, for the operetta composed by Jacques Offenbach (Berlin: Ed. Bote and G. Bock, 1859; "Den Bühnen gegenüber als Manuscript gedruckt"). It has been annotated as a prompt book, and is marked as the property of Theodor Bloch, who ran a theater lending library in Philadelphia from around 1880 to 1895. Included is a separate handwritten insert that bears what appear to be revised lyrics for song no. 4 "Trinklied"; the insert is written on the reverse of a scrap of paper torn from what appears to be a theater-contract template designed for contracts dating in the 1870s. A German-language newspaper clipping, dated by hand 5 Oct. 1880, of an obituary for Offenbach is pasted to the front inside cover of the book. See folder 698 for a related theater newspaper advertising a performance of the operetta at Germania Theater, Philadelphia, ca. April-May 1892.
