Der Pole und sein Kind, oder: Der Feldwebel vom 4. Regiment : Liederspiel in 2 Acten, ca. 1870-1880, n.d.

The work dates from 1832. Lortzing was both the author of the text and the composer of the music. (No music is included here.) The file contains materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a handwritten transcription of the text in a hard-covered notebook, with annotations, used as a prompt-book; and 7 handwritten role books, for the following parts: Hermann Redlich, ein reicher Pachter; Demoiselle Winkelmann, seine Cousine; Jacob, sein Vetter; Magister Hilarius; FoĢˆrster Kugelauf; Fanicky, ein Pole; and Franzischeck, sein Kind, Knabe von 6 Jahren. (The character list shows 1 additional role: Marie.) The transcription of the text is labeled on the title page as the property of "Fuchs" (one or two initials preceding the last name are unclear). Several names of cast members written on the front of role books seem to indicate that the materials were used for a performance in Philadelphia in the 1870s, or probably not later than 1880. The handwritten text might date from a somewhat earlier period. In the context of the Learned Collection it is likely that the materials were part of the theater lending library of Theodor Bloch; the title appears in Bloch's catalog for his library (dated 1886; see box 34). (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.)
