Maria und Magdalena : Schauspiel in vier Acten, ca. 1873-1892.

Materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Berlin: Georg Stilke, 1873), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; a handwritten scenario; 4 handwritten items (resembling letters) that were used as props in the play (2 items are different versions of the same content); and 15 handwritten role books, for the following parts: Bernd, Fürst zu Rothenthurn; Graf Egg, sein Oheim; Werren, Geheimer Commerzienrath; Elly Werren; Magdalena, geb. von Hohenstrassen; Laurentius, Professor an der Akademie; Maria Verrina; Dr. Gels von Gelzinnen; Frau von Zingelberg; Alma, ihre Tochter; von Gulzbach; von Merz; Schelman, Theateragent; Hans, Diener im Hause des Geheimraths; and Röschen, Kammermädchen. (The role books apparently represent the complete cast as the play was performed, although the character list shows one additional role: Johann, Diener.) The role book for Hans bears sketches and notes regarding stage design and props on the back cover. The published copy is part of Lindau's Theater; the title page gives the date of the play's premiere, July, Aug. 1872. Pasted on the inside front cover is a playbill clipping (a newspaper advertisement) giving the cast of a performance of the play at Turnerhalle Sommer-Theater, Philadelphia, on 16 Sept. 1873. The published copy and all except one of the role books are labeled as the property of Theodor Bloch, who was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia from at least the early 1870s until the mid 1890s, first as an actor and later as a prompter, and who ran a theater lending library. Names of actors and actresses noted on the front of role books reflect three or four different casts over time, from approximately 1873 to 1892. Three sets of cast members are also noted in the published copy, on the page with the character list. See the index in the collection's register for details about 2 related theater newspapers (drawer 35) and 2 playbills (box 36).
