Aside from 1 item from Rudolf Werfel, dated 1932 (the only item from Rudolf), and the 2 items from Werfel (in 1933 and 1934), the correspondence begins in late 1940, when Albine and Rudolf Werfel were living in France, and Franz Werfel and Alma Mahler had already arrived in the U.S. Topics include the situation of Werfel's parents in France and their plans for emigration; later, Albine's life in New York City; news of Werfel's sisters; and Albine's interest in Franz's literary work and in the well being of Franz and Alma. The item from Franz Werfel dated 1933 is contained in a reprint of an article from Goldstücker, published in the journal Austriaca in 1975, accompanied by an introductory essay from Goldstücker; Werfel wrote the letter shortly after the Nazi rise to power in Germany and while he was at work on his novel Die vierzig Tage des Musa Dagh.
