The son of German musicians who immigrated to the United States at the turn of the 20th century, Harold von Hofe was born in Plainsfield, NJ, on April 23, 1912. In 1939, after earning a bachelor's degree from New York University and a doctorate from Northwestern University, von Hofe relocated to Los Angeles and took a job teaching German at USC.
