A native of Vienna, Fritz Stiedry (1883-1968) had apparently been briefly acquainted with Werfel in Leipzig, around 1912; and then knew Werfel and Alma Mahler in Vienna around 1924, at which time Alma (as Stiedry recalls in a letter) was influential in his becoming director of the Volksoper.
