Correspondence with Adolf Klarmann, 1948-1973.

A major portion of the correspondence concerns publishing matters (especially editorial work) pertaining to Klarmann's edited volumes of Franz Werfel's poems, stories and plays. Other topics include the following: the publication of Werfel's unfinished novel Cella (including its serialziation in the German newspaper Neue Zeitung), as well as new editions of Werfel's previously published works; Klarmann's manuscript for the posthumous volume of prose writings by Werfel, Zwischen Oben und Unten (the rights to which were eventually released by S. Fischer, so that Klarmann could go elsewhere; it was later published by Langen Müller); the accounting of Klarmann's honoraria and book purchases; and miscellaneous matters related to Werfel scholarship or, occasionally, to other scholarly activities of Klarmann. Included are 2 signed contracts between Klarmann and S. Fischer Verlag, pertaining, respectively, to Werfel's collected plays, Dramen (published 1959), and to a biography of Werfel (which Klarmann apparently never completed). Also included are 4 German newspaper clippings concerning S. Fischer Verlag.
