A politically active author, Borchardt had been forced to leave Germany in 1933 and had lived for a while in the Soviet Union but was expelled in 1936. Following his return to Germany, he was eventually arrested and imprisoned in concentration camps, including Dachau, where, through mistreatment, he suffered the loss of his hearing and of one finger.
