Around 1941 Korngold sought Werfel's help in finding an American publisher for several works, including a memoir he had just completed, and his book Atonale Götzendämmerung (Twilight of the New Music) which he says had been in the process of publication in Austria in March 1938, when its distribution was hindered by the Anschluss. In early 1945 he apparently gave Werfel a manuscript he had written based on the biblical story of Esther (perhaps an opera libretto); Werfel responded and sent him a copy of his new book (probably Between Heaven and Earth) with an inscription.

Korngold was a noted music critic in Vienna and had been acquainted there with Alma and Gustav Mahler; he was the father of the composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957).
