Correspondence to Alma Mahler, 1910-1959.

In the earliest 5 items (transcripts), dating from 1910 to 1912, Klemperer speaks about his own composing and also makes reference to performances of Gustav Mahler's works, in one instance his own conducting of Mahler's fourth symphony in Hamburg; in 1 letter Klemperer reminsces about a childhood encounter with Mahler from afar. The conductor Artur Bodansky (in Mannheim at that time) is mentioned a number of times. In an explanatory annotation to these transcripts Alma Mahler refers to Klemperer as "ein junger Musiker, den Mahler sehr schätzte." The remaining 3 items of correspondence are dated 1952 to 1959. Also included is a manuscript of an essay (in English) about Gustav Mahler, presumed to be from Klemperer (the author mentions being present in Munich in 1910 for a rehearsal of the eighth symphony and that he missed the performance because he was conducting in Hamburg at that time); the manuscript is marked "copy" and bears handwritten corrections.
