Correspondence with Franz Werfel, 1938-1943.

Jarrolds was Werfel's publisher in England at this time. Werfel's letters, all written from Zurich in April of 1938, speak about his exile from Austria; the situation of the Paul Zsolnay Verlag (his German publisher at the time) in the wake of the German annexation of Austria; and his concern for the sales of his books in England. Cherry Kearton responds to Werfel on these subjects, and they also discuss Werfel's visit to London in May 1938. 2 items in 1938 and 1939 comprise statements of sales of Werfel's books. The single subsequent item is a letter from Kearton of 1943, in which he mainly tries to win Werfel for a new publishing company being founded by Hutchinsons, devoted to continental authors. The item from Ossia Trilling to Kearton (dated 1938) concerns a Stage Society production of Werfel's play Paulus unter den Juden (Paul among the Jews) in an English translation by Paul Levertoff, performed in London in 1928.
