Carlson says that at the time of publication of Werfel's novel The Forty Days of Musa Dagh, he had been hired by Werfel's publishers to do investigative work in connection with one of the characters in the book, in order to safeguard against a possible law suit; mainly, he inquires about Werfel's contact with the Armenian Mechitarist Fathers and Werfel's relationship to Catholicism.
