Luening describes hearing Stokowski conduct the Philadelphia Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in the 1920s and meeting him around 1928 when Stokowski performed Schoenberg's Die glückliche Hand for Martha Graham mentioning Stokowski's mastery of the score and control of the orchestra. He discusses their correspondence regarding Luening's compositions; Stokowski conducting the New York Philharmonic in a concert of contemporary music featuring MacDowell, Béla Bartók, Daniel Gregory Mason, Henry Cowell, Doug Moore and Luening. He also discusses the 1952 series of concerts at the Museum of Modern Art featuring music for the tapesichord including compositions by Ussachevsky and Luening, with an introductory speech by Stokowski; and mentioning Elliott Carter and Lou Harrison.
