Maurice Edgar Coindreau was a French author and translator, best known for his translations of key American novels into French. Born in La Roche-sur-Yon, France, he taught in Madrid before taking a position at Princeton, where he taught from 1922-1961. He translated both English and Spanish works into French, but is best known for his translations of major American authors, such as Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, and John Steinbeck, among many others.
