Papers of this Hempstead, N.Y. family include deeds, leases, legal papers, letters, receipts, account books, agreements, and genealogy; letters include those of John Sammis to his parents Mr. and Mrs. Nehemiah Sammis in Hempstead, 1849-1857, concerning travel experiences on his way to California during the Gold Rush, his experiences there and in Victoria, and his letters to his brother George Sammis written from Australia, 1892-1894. Other subjects include a brick factory, the Sammis Hotel, and estate settlements. Collection also include the Civil War discharge of George W. Schenck, 1865.
