Evert Eugene Mapes was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas on April 14, 1917, the son of Leo Evert and Ruth Brown Mapes. In 1941, he married Doris Genevieve Williamson of Russellville. They had one daughter, Eugenia Kay Mapes Caffey. Mapes graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1934 and from Fort Smith Junior College in 1936. He then attended the University of Arkansas, earning a degree in accounting in 1938. Mapes was employed as cashier and accountant with the American Security Company in Little Ro...
