Diary entries concern a walking tour through northern New Jersey, Rockland and Orange Counties, N.Y., and Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester Counties, N.Y. in 1846; studying law in the offices of a Bedford, N.Y. lawyer; the routine business of his own law practice; his experiences in Albany, N.Y. while serving in the New York State Legislature, 1848-1849, including detailed accounts of plays seen, historic houses visited, and other social affairs; political comments; and church attendance, social life, and other personal matters. Volumes one, 1846-1848, and four, 1849-1852, are original manuscripts; volumes two and three, 1848-1849, are typescript copies; included in volume two are transcripts of his letters, 1847-1850, concerning a visit to the Shakers outside of Albany, legislative and social events in Albany, a trip to Niagara Falls, and politics.
