Papers of the Smith family of Smithtown and several related families, including the Arthur, Blydenburgh, Lawrence, Mills, Strong, and Wilkes families; miscellaneous papers of numerous other Long Island residents; documents and writings on local history; and genealogical material, particularly on the Smith, Lawrence, and Embree families. Smith family papers document the history of Richard "Bull" Smythe (1613-1692), and his descendents to the 10th generation, including deeds, patents, testimonies, and maps relating to the transfer of land in Smithtown from Chief Wyandance (or Wyandanch) to Lion Gardiner and from Gardiner to Richard Smythe, 1663-1705, and documents relating to the controversy with the Town of Huntington, N.Y., over title to Smythe's land, ca. 1768. Papers of Caleb Smith I (1724-1800), include family correspondence, 1742-1771, beginning with his years at Yale College, and papers relating to his duties as Suffolk County Judge, 1785-1796; letters and legal papers of Caleb Smith II (1763-1831) concern his personal affairs as well as his duties as a Suffolk County supervisor, county judge, and member of the New York State Assembly. Papers of Joshua Smith II (1763-1845) include a title abstract to his lands, 1795-1840, title to land in Oswego County, N.Y., 1825, estate accounts, 1846-1862, and a biography.
