Essays, diaries, book manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, notes, and clippings. Autobiographical notes mention many people he knew including Stanford White, the Vanderbilts, and George Santayana, whom Butler knew at Harvard and remained friends with for many years. There are copies of letters from Santayana and speeches and reminiscences by Butler about Santayana. Travel writings include diaries of trips to Florida and Europe, accounts of trips to India and of a round-the-world trip in 1926; a scrapbook of a trip to Europe with photographs, postcards, sketches, and notes, 1923; and "A Newport Week-End," 1927. Also, personal essays on various topics, writings about Garden City, N.Y. and the Garden City Hotel, and photograph albums and scrapbooks about the Smithtown Horse Show, 1909-1923.
