Records, 1971-1978, 1973-1974 (bulk)

Records consist primarily of memoranda between the Santiago field office and the New York office, memoranda among staff within the Santiago office, and outside correspondence, related to the status of grants after the military coup d'état of September 11, 1973 in Chile. Records document Foundation's monitoring of the situation, and contain many assessments by the staff of the significance of the coup, the nature of the new regime, and the future role of the Foundation in Chile. The papers illustrate the high priority the Foundation gave to documenting the changes the military made in the universities, as well as the Foundation's effort to relocate intellectuals affected by the coup to other Latin American countries and to the United States. Also included are news clippings from Chilean newspapers describing the overthrow of the Allende administration and conditions in Chile in the months following the coup.
