Papers consist primarily of letters to Lossing, 1846-1891, concerning requests for lectures and articles, Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) lodge affairs, his engraving work, publishing, historical inquiries, personal news, and church and civic affairs including a public dispute over the role of the Bible in public schools. Correspondents include Charles J. Buckingham, Stephen M. Buckingham, and Edward C. Bolton. Other items include bills and receipts, 1847-1889; his notes on local history; minutes and notices from meetings; clippings; and a letter from Lossing to his sister Mrs. Elizabeth Buck concerning his trip through North Carolina, 1849.
