Diary concerns tour of cotton and woolen mills in the northeast and mid-Atlantic states that Holbrook did in 1827-1828 for the Manhattan Fire Insurance Company. Entries mention the physical size of factories, condition of machinery, number of spindles, cloth output, and raw material consumed. He also notes travel conditions, church services attended, and funeral services for Governor Clinton. The volume includes his copies of letters sent to his employer with his recommendations in regard to fire prevention and also commenting on moral character and condition of manufacturing, people employed, and benefits provided by employers such as libraries, boarding houses, and Sabbath schools. There is also a draft of a letter regarding a manufacturing concern, 1839.
