Collection consists primarily of maps of Fishkill Landing, Matteawan, Beacon, and the surrounding area, 1850-1978, and includes Sanborn insurance maps, 1889-1919. Other maps include the Wiltsie farm, 1834; land of the Ackerman family, 1852; Dutchess County, 1829-1934; the Hudson River, 1777-1845; the province of New York, 1775-1779; the Brett mill site, 1954; West Point, 1778-1780; and Clinton, N.Y., drawn by a British Army officer, 1777.

The Sanborn Map Company was founded in 1867 with headquarters in New York City. Its purpose was to produce maps that would show "at a glance the character of the fire insurance risks of all buildings" in a give community. Since these maps had a very specialized use, "there were usually fewer than twenty orders for a single map sheet".
