Hall of Geology and Invertebrate Paleontology geological museum photographs, 1910-1952.

Photographs documenting the former arrangement of the old Geological Hall and the plans for rearranging this collection into the Hall of Geology and Invertebrate Paleontology. Shows rock specimen exhibits, the New Zealand and Pennsylvania section, plant history of the earth section, wall cases containing sponges and sea fans, and views of the "sparker" which was an attempt to use ultra-violet light on minerals to determine their fluorescence. Photographs were taken by Edmund O. Hovey, J. Otis Wheelock, Julius Kirchner, Thane L. Bierwert, Charles H. Coles, Leon Boltin, Alex J. Rota, and Hugh S. Rice. Photographs are identified.

Edmund Otis Hovey was a geologist and museum curator. He joined the American Museum of Natural History in 1894 as assistant curator in the Dept. of Geology and Paleontology, becoming associate curator in 1901 and curator in 1910. He was also acting administrator of the museum for two brief periods. Hovey's main areas of interest were volcanoes, earthquakes and meteorites.
