Correspondence of curators and collectors pertaining to field work, identification and acquisition of specimens, research, and other related curatorial responsibilities. Papers of curators also include expedition reports, notes, and some manuscripts pertaining to their research. Departmental administrative records, correspondence from the field, and field diaries. Extensive collection of photographs depicting fossils housed in the department and field photographs illustrating excavation of paleontological specimens and the geology of the region. Maps used by collectors, some marked to show locality where fossils were found. Most collecting expeditions were to the American West in the 20th century.
