Lowie's papers consist of his detailed field notebooks recording his observations of the Hidatsa, with notes on Hidatsa ceremonies and linguistics, 1910, 1913; Mandan and Crow, with notes on Crow linguistics, 1907-1916; Arikara, 1910; Santee, 1911; Mandan, 1911; Shoshone, n.d.; South Paiute, 1915; Assinaboine, 1907-1908; Hopi, 1915-1916; Ute, Kiowa, and Comanche, 1912; Paviosto (North Paiute), 1914; Wind River, Shoshone, 1912; and Chipewyan, n.d. In addition, Lowie's college notes, and transcript notes and sketches for his publication, "Crow Indian Art."

Robert H. Lowie was a noted anthropologist, professor of anthropology, and specialist on the Crow Indians. He moved from Vienna to New York in 1893, and later received his doctorate from Columbia University, studying with Franz Boas. After doing curatorial and field work for the American Museum of Natural History, in 1921 he joined the anthropology faculty at U.C. Berkeley, where he taught until his retirement in 1950.
