Anthropometric data, 1891-1942.

Data collected by Franz Boas and field workers under his direction for anthropometric studies of many tribes of North American Indians, Jewish schoolchildren, Japanese, some blacks, many immigrants including Italians who entered New York City schools, and a limited amount of data about Bohemians. In addition to anthropometric measurements, other data encompass x-ray photographs of the hands, wrists, and teeth and samples of hair. Data may include information on puberty, and for many immigrant schoolchildren, date and place of birth, parents and grandparents, and year family entered United States.

Born in Minden, Germany, on July 8, 1858, the anthropologist Franz Boas was the son of the merchant Meier Boas and his wife, Sophie Meyer. Raised in the radical and tradition of German Judaism, Franz's youth was steeped in politically liberal beliefs and a largely secular outlook that he carried with him from university through his emigration to the United States.
