Compton, Alfred G. (Alfred George), 1835-1913

Born in London in 1853 and brought to New York City in 1842. Attended public schools and was a member of the first graduating class of the Free Academy of New York (later City College). Although drawn to engineering, he accepted a Tutorship at the Academy and taught a variety of subjects. During the Civil War he worked on fortifications.
