The collection largely consists of Booth's diaries and travel logs. The diaries cover the years 1844-1854 and discuss in great detail political and social life in Washington, D.C., his subsequent move to Mine-a-Joe, Mo. to pursue mining business, his first wife's death, resettling in Wilbur, N.Y. in 1847, and his business as a merchant, with comments on social life, community events, black and Irish people, politics, and amusing stories. Travel logs include a trip to New York City and New Haven, Conn. with his children in 1861 and a trip through the South by Booth and his second wife in 1870 with comments on a visit to Louisiana's legislature, blacks, carpetbaggers, accommodations, transportation, and the countryside. Both volumes include sketches by Booth. Other items include invitations, wedding announcements, estate papers, certificates, correspondence, calling cards, agreements, receipts, and a genealogical chart, 1831-1892, concerning Booth, his son Nathaniel Booth, Jr., Cornelius and Mary Booth Van Gaasbeek, and the Shaffer family; a map of Mine-a-Joe, Mo., copied by N. Booth, 1846; and Booth's account of the friendship between the Negro servants, Alexander Powell and Harley, who worked for President Arthur and General Sharpe, with a copy of a letter attributed to Powell concerning Arthur's visit to Kingston in 1884.
