Files of the Public Affairs unit reflect the influence of the National Board on the development of public policy and encompass records pertaining to the National Board's involvement in many government relations and worldwide social and economic welfare issues. The collection includes the National Board's newsletter and news service bulletins. Files deal with a variety of international human welfare issues such as the status of women, various organizations of the United Nations, the international peace effort, especially American policy in several conflicts, limitation of armaments, neutrality, and other issues, social and economic welfare covering housing, trade policies, price control, consumers, labor including wages and hours, child welfare, employment, training and vocational guidance, health insurance, social security, and women workers. Civil liberties and democratic rights deal with such matters as campus unrest, 1965-1970; civil rights, communism and the loyalty issue, and conscription, freedom programs, and the Angela Davis case as it refers to racism. Most of the minority group series is concerned with civil rights and race relations, employment problems, race discrimination during World War II, and segregation of blacks. Other ethnic groups dealt with in series are Asians, Mexicans, and Latin Americans. Much of the material discusses laws affecting these groups.

In 1945, four individuals who had worked on the Manhattan project-John L. Balderston, Jr., Dieter M. Gruen, W.J. McLean, and David B. Wehmeyer-formed a committee and wrote a letter to 154 public figures asking for their opinions about the possibility of the creation of a world government.
