Records documenting the history of the YWCA include minutes of the Board of Directors, 1870-1986; annual reports, 1871-1985; and material concerning annual meetings and anniversary celebrations; administrative records of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee; and financial information. Also, newsletters, public relations and public affairs material. Records document some of the 19th century YWCA training programs which were influenced by the practices and development of inventions in business and industry including typing, telephone, bookkeeping, photography, and sewing. Material illustrates the YWCA's cultural services and religious orientation. Some of the special schools operated by the YWCA are the Warner School (for business), Harlem Trade School (for Black women), Craft Students League, Clark Center for the Performing Arts, Ballard School (for educational classes and training of practical nurses), and Central School for Physical Education. Records provide information about social issues with which the YWCA was involved such as racism and civil rights, World Fellowship, teenage and young adults programs, and other activities and programs in addition to a diverse mix of programs in health and recreation.
