Manuscripts listing vocabulary of Sioux words, ca.1884; other manuscripts dispelling some commonly held myths about American Indians, and other topics; correspondence with American Indians, American Indian representatives, and others, ca.1880's-1910; a diary of Smith's experiences with the Onondaga, 1889; and a sketchbook, 1888-1889. Also, printed maps locating Indian reservations in the United States, some annotated, dated 1881-1886, outlining his travels to the West Coast from 1893-1894. Collection also includes publications and news clippings about various aspects of American Indian life, 1882-1916; a series of papers on French painter Jean François Millet's American Indian drawings, which were later hand-tinted by Karl Bodmer; published articles, 1943-1945; an article written by Smith, 1910; news clippings; photographs of Bodmer's paintings; and correspondence, 1907-1910. Two letters are in French.

DeCost Smith was born in Skaneateles, New York, about 1865, the son of Reul Smith. He studied art in Paris and New York City and traveled around the world doing paintings of nature. He spent time on the Rosebud, Lower Brule, and Standing Rock Indian Reservations in Dakota Territory in 1884. He also wrote about Native American topics. He died in 1939.
