Jones's research notes consist of correspondence, news clippings, photographs of artifacts, and notes for his book OUTLINE OF EXPLORATIONS OF THE ANTIQUITIES OF TENNESSEE AND MORE ESPECIALLY OF THE CUMBERLAND VALLEY, 1867-1868. The collection includes many of the original color paintings of the artifacts that were used as illustrations in the book. His book is housed in the Library. Collection also contains a "Catalogue of the Archaeological Collection of Joseph Jones," prepared in 1888, describing artifacts from North and South America, with some from Europe, Africa and Asia. For each item he provided a description with place of origin and dimensions, as well as some printed illustrations. Also, a printed copy of a chapter from his book EXPLORATIONS OF THE ABORIGINAL REMAINS OF TENNESSEE, 1876; correspondence; and a news clipping about the Mound Builders.

Joseph Jones (6 Sept. 1833-17 Feb. 1896), physician and scientist, was born in Liberty County, Georgia, the son of Charles Colcock Jones, a major planter and prominent minister to the slaves, and his first cousin, Mary Sharpe Jones.
