Correspondence about personal, family, and Quaker affairs, 1792-1914; testimony of John Bowne concerning his innocent wife after she had died from complications caused by her imprisonment, 1677 (may be a handwritten copy of original); transcriptions of letters to, from, and about John Bowne while he awaited trial for permitting Quakers to worship in his home, and letters from other Bowne family members. Originals written between 1663 and 1679 primarily concern religious issues. Also, transcriptions of nineteenth century letters of Bowne family referring to investigations of family genealogy and history.

The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church.
