Parsons family papers, 1773-1963, 1840-1900 (bulk).

Primarily personal papers of two Quaker families of Flushing, the Parsons and the Bownes. Includes correspondence, discussions of religious matters, financial papers, real estate papers, and genealogical information. Of note are a scrapbook of news clippings maintained by Samuel Parsons Jr., concerning controversy over Central Park and Parsons' role as a landscape architect, 1890-1911; typescript of novel THE QUAKER CROSS, written by Cornelia Mitchell Parsons concerning the Bowne House, 1911; diary of Samuel Parsons, itinerant Quaker preacher, 1794-1841; and a scrapbook of news clippings maintained by M.M. Parsons concerning the Naval Reserve, 1898.

Samuel Parsons was the son of James and Mary Parsons and in 1806 married Mary Bowne. He was an Orthodox Quaker, serving as an elder and long-time clerk of New York Yearly Meeting; he was Clerk at the time of the Hicksite-Orthodox separation. The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham.
