Collection of historical notes, manuscripts, articles, correspondence, lists of inscriptions, and transcriptions of church records and proceedings of town meetings, all concerning Long Island history. Included are manuscripts for two volumes entitled "Long Island in Olden Times," 1850, 1871; two volumes entitled "Bibliography of Long Island," 1866, 1876; "Farming in Olden Times in Queens County," undated; "Supplement to the Revolutionary Incidents of Suffolk and Kings Counties, 1775-1789," 1871; "History of Society of Friends of Westbury, Meetings 1659-1788," undated; "Notes for a history of horse-breeding and horse-racing in Queens County, 1665-1835," undated; and notes on the genealogy of the Hegeman and Muntford families. Also included are lists of births, baptisms, marriages, and/or deaths from Jamaica Reformed Dutch Church, 1702-1823; Jamaica Grace Church, ca.1679-1848; Reformed Dutch Church of Kings County, 1660-1775; the towns of Newtown, Lake Success, Manhasset, Jamaica, and Oyster Bay, 1720-1859. In addition, "Indexes of Wills of Surrogates Office" of New York City and Queens County, 1665-1786; "List of Names in Old Records of Queens County," undated; and a "Register of Names and Proceedings for the Long Island Society of Friends," 1656-1732. Some correspondence concerning historical research on Major John Kissan, 1772-1782, and the Battle of Long Island is also included.

Henry Onderdonk (1804-1886) was an educator and historian, a collector of Long Island antiquities, and the author of many works based on his findings among local records. Later, he became a founder (1863) and councilor (1868-1886) of the Long Island Historical Society (now the Brooklyn Historical Society), and a contributor to the Society's library and manuscript collections upon their formation.
