Kempen papers.

Material regarding the history of the Jews of Kempen, 1674-1945, mostly notes written by Louis Lewin. There are also many postcards addressed to Louis Lewin, Dr. M. Brann, and Dr. Siegmund Frankel. An unrelated postcard dated 1945 from Emanuel Moses in Toronto to Detroit. There is a series of postcards from Rabbi Ḥayim Yaʻaḳov Zilberberg of Warsaw asking Lewin's help in reprinting the books of his teacher, Rabbi Yaʻaḳov Śimḥah, who had been rabbi of Kempen in the 19th century. Zilberberg specifically asked for help in reprinting his teacher's Shaʻare Śimḥah, which he himself had helped print in 1877. Lewin helped financially, resulting in the 1911 edition. He also contributed a responsum of the author, appearing in the 1911 ed., as mentioned in one of Zilberberg's postcards. Lewin's help is acknowledged in the introduction to the 1911 ed.
