Ledger, 1839-1857.

ArchivalResource

Ledger, 1839-1857.

Ledger containing two sets of entries. The first group of entries, December 1839-February 1841, were recorded at an unidentified location with no indication of the method of payment. These entries pertain to foodstuffs (and sometimes coal) provided to persons (evidently employees of an unspecified enterprise) on an almost daily basis. The first page of the second group of entries, which begin in March 1841, is headed "New Jersey." Most of these entries pertain to persons employed by Cooper (who is named in the ledger only in one account and two receipts). These employees, all men, may have been agricultural workers and, for some, the duration and dollar amounts of their contracts are specified. Most frequently charged against their accounts were cash and foodstuffs.
