ALS, 1877 July 6 : Sacramento, to Frank Thomas.

Written on State of California, Executive Department letterhead, Irwin as Governor writes: " ... at the election at which I was chosen there were two other candidates -- R.G. Phelps, Republican and John Bidwell, Independent -- and I had between four and five hundred majority over both."

He helped form the Western Immigration Society in 1840, which led to the formation of the Bidwell-Bartleson wagon train, the first emigrant train to Calif.
