These papers indicate a record of Lear's movements and expenses during his journey from Washington to New York and back on behalf of the U.S government from June 28, 1814 to July 31, 1814. Includes: retained, corrected drafts, manuscript documents, letters received, memoranda and notes concerning Lear as the American negotiator for a prisoner exchange between the United States and the British government during the War of 1812. Negotiations took place in Champlain Town, New York, near the Canadian border during July 1814.
