Papers, 1939-1977 (bulk 1941-1948).

The files consist of Dr. Raitt's office files while he was working at the University of California Division of War Research (UCDWR) and at the Marine Physical Laboratory at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography on several projects concerning underwater sound. The files include data, correspondence, laboratory notebooks, lecture notes, committee records and other material. Correspondents include George Shor and Sir Edward Bullard. An item entitled Raitt Notebook, 1956 includes diary entries for Dr. Raitt's trip to England in 1956 and his participation there in the Discovery II Expedition. The notebook also includes notes of conversations with George Shor, Tom Gaskell, Sir Edward Bullard, V.V. Belousov, and notes on lectures. It also includes information on plans for the IGY, lists of slides used in talks and notes on MOHO studies. The lecture series of the Raitt papers include notes and transcripts of lectures delivered at Marine Physical Laboratory, University of California Division of War Research, San Diego Laboratory, and the Navy Electronics Lab and at SIO by Carl Eckart, Leonard Lieberman, R. B. Lindsay, Walter Munk, Harald Sverdrup, and Russell Raitt. The collection also includes a draft of the national Defense Research Committee summary technical report, vol. 6-VIII, edited by Carl Eckart. These reports describe the work undertken by the UCDWR San Diego Labortory during the period 1941-1946 on oceanography and underwater sound. Added to the Raitt papers in 1/19/91 are 219 lantern slides.

Deep sea drilling project

As early as 1957 earth scientists discussed the possiblity of drilling a hole through oceanic crust to the Mohorovicic discontinuity.
