James Chester Bradley was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He showed an early interest in natural history, especially insects, and published his first scientific paper at age 15. Frederic and Edith Clements were husband and wife botanists and pioneering ecologists. Frederic (1874-1945) was educated at the University of Nebraska, receiving his Ph. D. in 1898.
