Diary of a journey across Europe while returning from service as unpaid secretary to the U.S. legation in St. Petersburg. Gray describes travel conditions in Russia; the conditions of the peasants in Russia, Estonia, and Prussia; libraries, palaces, art galleries, scientific cabinets, and churches in Berlin, and has a brief account of his trip across England to Liverpool. Also includes a description of a trip to Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home near Charlottesville, Va.
