Inman F. Eldredge oral history interview, 1959.

Two oral history interviews with Inman F. Eldredge, the whole of the first at New Orleans, La., on February 3, 1959, and a portion of the second at Fort Walton Beach, Fla., on July 9, 1959. Eldredge discusses his education at the Biltmore Forest School in North Carolina, his employment with the U.S. Forest Service, developments in forestry in the United States, the pulp and paper industries, the turpentine industry, Choctawhatchee National Forest, his service with the 10th Engineers during World War I, and noteworthy American foresters.

Carl Alwin Schenck, founder of the first forestry school in the United States, Biltmore Forest School (1898-1913), was born in Darmstadt, Germany on March 25, 1868. Prior to the opening of the school at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, he studied forestry in Tubingen and Giessen Universities, receiving a Doctorate of Philosophy. Inman F. "Cap" Eldredge graduated from the Biltmore Forest School in 1905 and entered the U.S. Forest Service as a student assistant. In 1909 he was appointed supervisor of the newly created Choctawhatchee and Ocala national forests in Florida, which he organized and managed for eight years. William Buckhout Greeley was a graduate of the Yale Forest School and began his career in forestry in 1904. He was Chief Forester of the U.S. Forest Service from 1920-1928.
